General Farm Update

Sorry, but for this month to be honest, I wasn't sure what to do for a blog, and also, quite a few things have suddenly happened at once, so I decided to do a general update.

NEW CHICKENS!!!

As you may know, but we have some new chickens!! Early this month, we purchase 30 new chickens! They were about 16 weeks old and are called 'Pullets'.

We got a varied number of different breeds, so that you can have a good experience when you open one of our egg boxes and find it filled with varying colours:

  • Warrens – your basic hybrid, the ones that lay the fantastic all-round brown egg.

  • Yorkshire blues – locally reared, white feathers chickens, lay blue eggs

  • White leghorns – smaller, more skittish bird that lays white eggs.

  • Tri-coloured leghorns – lay cream-coloured eggs, has brown, orange and white flecked feathers.

  • Norfolk greys – lovely-coloured hens, black and grey coloured, they lay dark brown eggs.

AVIAN BIRD FLU UPDATE

As you may know, the government has officially released the containment order of all chickens so that finally our chickens were allowed out as of the 10th of May 2022.

To err on the side of caution, we have let out all our chickens incrementally, in batches to try and reduce the threat of us catching the 'bird flu'.

I am happy to announce that all our laying hens, (so that is all the eggs that you get from out the front) are now outside, happy, and free range.

NEW DRINKERS!!!

In our farm, we have always strive to be efficient and effective in the production of eggs and especially the welfare of our hens. So I am happy to announce that we have purchased some new drinkers!!!

These have come all the way from Germany, and after many hold-ups through the channel tunnel etc. they are finally here and working well.

OUR LITTLE (OR NOW BIG) CHICKS

Our little chicks that we hatched in the start of March (if you remember) are now almost 12 weeks old!!!!

THE SHEEP

All winter the sheep have been on our fields, wintering outside or in, it was their option.

You may have noticed that they are not there anymore...Well this is because we have moved them to a kind friend's fields so that our fields can recover and grow after being nibbled at for over 6 months constantly.
